27 Songs were made in the residency at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre at Annaghmakerrig, Ireland during a very rainy June of 2012. I traveled to Ireland with the studio materials that could fit in my suitcase: a ziplock bag with thirty or so small square sheets of Oguni kozo paper, various pieces of my old prints, wrapping paper, chiyogami paper, some acrylic, pencils, chalk, charcoal, some glue (I acquired the wiggle eyes locally, in nearby town, Monaghan, a few days into my residency). I had a view of green, wet boughs of ferns and unsettled, grey Irish sky in a very large window. I was free of my own studio with my things on the walls, free of the agendas or projects or series.
They are thought seeds, analog to aphorisms or brief poems. They speak of daily thoughts, about environment I was surrounded by, about the heightened sense of being in the world that solitary travel seems to induce, about conversations with, and work by other resident artists at the Centre, about displacement and new growth. They are my testimony to walking, looking at woods, birds and puddles, musing and tinkering in the studio. They are about listening to the stories of shape, color and line.
